Structural changes to log in system

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Today I implemented some changes to the log in system. The change is huge on the technical level (split the functionality to multiple separate scripts), but the basics are the same with only minimal visual changes.

Please report any bugs you encounter in the new system. I test and test and test, but as usual, when thousands of users put it to the test at the same time, things that I couldn't possibly think of would pop up.

Well... I logon on like normal, went to SOL, then to Bookapy and logged out ... but it didn't although it appeared to. From Bookapy after pressing logout, it went to a blank screen. Using the back page key, I found I was still logged in to Bookapy, and back page took me to the SOL and still logged on. From SOL logout worked.

I am using Safari on a Mac. Both are current on updates.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the bug report. Fixed.

Not a bug but an observed difference. Firefox had 'forgotten' my e-mail address from a list that it keeps somewhere, so I had to type it in by hand when I logged in.

That presumably means the url is sufficiently divergent as to make Firefox believe it is a different site. This is a "good thing" (thank you "1066 and all that") because it places a barrier in the way of phishing sites.
You did check that the site really was SOL? Or was it one of the other three sites?

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@awnlee jawking

The domain and URL for log in didn't change at all.

Although, for better compatibility with password managers, I changed the name of the email field from 'email' to 'username' so that may be what triggered that.

Actually that explains other symptoms not obviously related to SOL. Thank you.

I have no idea if my problem is a result of your change, but when you mentioned "email" and then I saw "not obviously related to SOL" in awnlee's post, I thought I'd mention it.

First, I haven't logged off of SOL in some time. Second, I'm using Safari on a Mac.

I have Hotmail bookmarked. I click on the bookmark and it takes me to Hotmail's sign-on page. I enter my userid and password. It hangs. I have to click on the bookmark again to get to my inbox. It happens on all my Hotmail accounts, not only the one I use for SOL. And it happens every time.

It's probably not related to the SOL change, but it just started happening recently.

ETA: I just tried it with Chrome and it worked fine. So it's only Safari.

I cleared my cache and the Hotmail "hanging" problem went away.

Weird, but I highly doubt that's related to changes made to the WLP login page. Unless you're talking about the 5 sites where this is supposed to work.

While being logged in to SOL, I just tried using the links on the homepage to hop over to finestories, scifistories and bookapy. I got stuck on a twirly thing each time.

I tried typing scifistories directly into the address bar. I got the homepage but I wasn't logged in. I clicked on login and got the endless twirly thing again.

That's happened before to me, and indeed, I have just tried it and it's happening again. (Firefox. Cache cleared, but not the saved logins, as that's too much of an arse...)

Immediately after my last post, I tried to log out - I got stuck on the twirly thing again. I shut all my Firefox windows, which causes Firefox to shut down and clear cookies. Then I started it up again. SOL gave me the login screen but when I tried to log in, I got stuck on the twirly thing again.

I've just started up Firefox this morning. I was able to log in okay and I've just hopped to scifistories from the SOL home page.

I am mightily relieved.

I tried earlier to log in and it kept timing out. Do not know if it is a outright system problem with it but I tried several different times and it has at least until now done that.

So. Yes, was broken. Three laptops, one PC, four different browsers and three different OS.
I'm going to say this carefully. This is not limited to this site.
When it breaks, there is no direct contact. You can use the "contact us" link, which I did 5 or 6 times. Cannot even ask on this forum, because you cannot log in!
Has to be some way to have a specific contact link that somebody sees when the sit breaks.

Glad to have it back.

My XP machines are happy, too!

If you can't log in, select the free trial. You can use the 'contact' form on the home page. I'm not sure how the interaction with management would proceed. Can they detect you're not logged in and send you an e-mail response with a return address, rather than a SOL PM?

Oh, I tried the free account bit. No workee on three laptops and one PC. I sent the data displayed on screen to admin in a "contact us" message, so they do have that.
Nothing would allow me to go to the next half of the page I was on....except one browser on one computer. That allowed me to continue with the story.
I am not gonna tell which OS or browser, as I don't want that capability stopped if this happens again.
No log in, no chance of posting in this forum, no free account bypass, only "contact us" and hope.
I even tried on the WLPC page to log in, same failures. I looked up the ARIN listing for ownership...sometimes that shows contact for owner...but no. Linode.com was it. Good folks now, several years ago went round and round over their spam issues.

Oh, I tried the free account bit.

Not free account, free trial. It's an option on the first SOL screen to allow visitors to sample the wares without committing to signing up and providing an e-mail address.

yeah, that's what I meant without logging out and seeing exactly what it said.
Didn't work. Tried to remember...I think it took me to the standard log-in page which of course was non-functional.
What really surprises me in this thread is the number of folks who were able to get logged in (or maybe they never logged out) who could post. Did not seem to be a function of Windows OS, as I had 4 versions, or Browsers, of which I had.....four. And none worked. Anywhere.
Maybe folks were using Mac and Safari.
I had a couple of obscure browsers I could have tried, but just gave up and waited.

Ah, but the easy part is XP-64 on one, XP-32 on another. NO updates, no tracking, no "unique advertising ID", NO telemetry.
Look up MyPal. Had to run the PaleMoon fork on this old Sony Vaio, but the 64 bit gets the FireFox Quantum based MyPal68.
When you think about it, all the hand wringing that FireFox won't work on XP after FF52ESR....and we're running FF68-FF74 flawlessly.
I ALMOST fired up the Ubuntu box to see if that worked during this "issue", but I had enough on my plate.
I'm too old and grumpy to try new-fangled stuff. My "new" auto is 1964. My other two are 1950. An no smart phones, either.

On my computer, it was only the log in process that was having problems. The free trial option still worked, and from there the contact form. I tried it, although I stopped short of actually sending a message.

My Premier Membership expired around 11 hours ago and - as always - I said "Do not renew" so that I could see how the freebie accounts work.
This time I was stuck in a 3 screen loop so I tried in a "private window" and - as it turns out - followed the advice in this sub-thread, and sent a Help Request via the Contact form.
Then I had the idea of clearing cache - also detailed in this sub-thread - and after that things started to work as they should.
Lazeez: forget the help request, problem fixed.

I renewed my account today but now I can log in on pc, but cannot login on mobile, changed password, now I can log in on mobile but not pc get password/email mismatch error. If I change the password on PC I cannot log in on mobile. Never had this issue before.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@daewin

If I change the password on PC I cannot log in on mobile.

First verify that you're using the exact same email address. Many people run into this problem and it turns out they have two separate accounts.

If using the same email address then this problem is usually caused by password handlers on diffent platforms.

To solve this problem, you need to delete whatever password is saved for login.wlpc.com on your computer and on your phone and then reset the password and use that password on both devices and save this new password that you create.

daewin ๐Ÿšซ

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Thanks that worked.
