Strange result in Advanced Search

Ordinary (not premier) account. Search in story title for " train ". Search Results displaying 1 through 10 of 24, titles all contain the word "train" and no variations. Click on page 2. Search Results displaying 11 through 20 of 161, titles contain words "train" or "training". By specifying " train " I am trying to exclude "training" and other variations.

What is going on ? Why does the search criterion change between page 1 and page 2 ?

Ian

ETA if I just search for train, Search Results 1 through 10 contains titles "trainer", "training", "unrestrained, "strain", "train".

It was a bug. Fixed.

Although you will hate the fix. The bug was a commented out line in the clean up code. Now even the initial page will show the 'training' results.

Thanks, I suppose. So there is no way to exclude the "training" results ?

I'm looking for a story I've read, I'm sure the word "train" is in the title. It's about someone meeting again someone he knew in high school. Now she's a celebrity. It's not in the first 50 results when they include the "training" etc variations.

ETA I did a Quick Search for "train". The first 50 at least of the hits had "train" in the title and none of the variations. And the story I was looking for was on the 5th page. "Runaway Train" https://storiesonline.net/s/13709/runaway-train

ETA 2 Actually, it was the first 68 stories, after that "train" was in the story text. So "Quick Search" is more useful than "Advanced Search" at least for me this time.

Ian

BTW, the results listing for "Advanced Search" ignores the "stories per page" from the account setting. Presumably Advanced Search is treated as a special case (even though there is a "settings" button on the results listing.

ETA 3 The results listing from "Quick Search" does NOT ignore the "stories per page" setting

Quick Search for "train". The first 50 at least of the hits had "train" in the title

Quick search on the home page uses the content search server and prioritizes title and author name. It always uses word search, so search for 'parent' won't return 'parents' for example.

Different mechanisms, different strengths.

Thanks again. Don't remember ever using Quick Search before, I'll certainly use it again.

There is a somewhat similar bug in Quick Search. I searched with 2 words separated by a blank, surrounded by quotes. The first page returned meets the search criterion of only the hits that contain the two words together. I have 50 stories per page, and in one instance I got 1 to 50 of 94 hits. Page 2 however ignores the quotes and returns the hits for either word, and I got 51 to 100 of 1000 hits.

As I said originally

Ordinary (not premier) account.

And "entire word only" is greyed out.

It's been so long since I had a non-Premier account that I don't recall the differences.

It's horrid these days. Progressively worse every time my account expires. Advanced search is almost 100% orange.

You get what you pay for. There has to be some incentive to try and get more premium members. It's for the survival of this great site. Showing what you can get with a premium membership is exactly that.

You can renew before it actually expires and avoid that problem.

Lazeez says he doesn't take anything away from free users. So if more is orange, then more Premier features were added.

@Switch Blayde

If his original comment on the thread is taken literally, he has paid premier access but he lets it lapse every time before renewing it.

Patient: "Doctor it hurts when I do this." (patient raises his arm).

Doctor: "Stop doing that."

I know. But I was referring to his comment that it gets worse each time his membership expires.
