pussy"s

In a Jeffery Deaver dead-tree novel about Lincoln Rhyme that I recently finished reading, there were several occurrences of the string in this thread's title.

I've been trying to work out how it came about, and the best I can come up with is:

1) The author used the greengrocer's apostrophe when formulating the plural of pussy ie pussy's

2) An editor subsequently made a global edit to replace single quotes by double quotes (and possibly vice versa).

3) The proofreaders, if any, missed the error.

Any other possibilities?

The plural is "pussies."

The plural is "pussies."

And isn't it inspiring to think you can become a world-famous author without knowing that. Shame on the editors/proofreaders though - it's their job to get that sort of detail right.

More likely, the editors marked the typo and the author screwed up the implementation, doing a global search and replace to ensure he got them all. The real fault is with the Lead Editor, whose whole job is ensuring the book about to be produced doesn't have any outstanding errors.

How old is the dead-tree novel? Before computers and word processors where you can make global changes?

@Switch Blayde

How old is the dead-tree novel?

The dead-tree novel, paperback version, is back at my local library.

According to Jeffery Deaver's website, the novel is from 2014 (presumably in hardback first).

Either Wikipedia (verb) or do an Amazon search on the novel's title (on Amazon, click on "all media types") and they'll list the original publication dates and publishers.

These types of errors can also crop up with the typesetter in the old days when things were printed on paper.

I know that Piers Anthony has talked about this at least once in one of his book notes. How he sent it in correct, a proofreader changed it, he changed it back, and the typesetter put it down in yet a different way.

He discovered on the galley print, and when he asked for it to be corrected they went back to how the original proofreader put it.
